Tanzania Travel Tips

Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Planning a trip to Tanzania? Whether it’s your first time in Africa or you’re a seasoned traveler, a few helpful tips can make your journey even smoother. Here’s what you need to know before you head out on your unforgettable adventure with Maverick Safaris.

1. Entry Requirements & Visas

Most visitors need a visa to enter Tanzania, which can be obtained online via the Tanzania eVisa Portal or on arrival at major airports. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel date and has blank pages for stamps.

2. Best Time to Visit

Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the dry seasons (June to October and January to February) are ideal for wildlife viewing. The Great Migration in the Serengeti is typically best from June to September.

3. Health & Vaccinations

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country where Yellow Fever is present. It’s also recommended to take malaria prevention medication. Visit a travel clinic before departure to discuss vaccinations and health precautions.

4. What to Pack

Pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing for safari, a warm jacket for early morning game drives, a sun hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars!

5. Currency & Payments

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but USD is widely accepted in tourist areas. ATMs are available in major towns. Carry some cash for remote areas where cards may not be accepted.

6. Language

Swahili is the national language, but English is widely spoken in tourist destinations. Learning a few Swahili greetings (like Jambo and Asante) is appreciated by locals.

7. Culture & Etiquette

Tanzania is a culturally diverse country. Dress modestly in towns and villages, always ask before taking photos of people, and show respect for local customs and traditions.

8. Connectivity

Wi-Fi is available in most lodges and hotels, but may be limited in remote areas. Local SIM cards with data plans are affordable and easy to purchase if you need better connectivity.

9. Safety Tips

Tanzania is generally safe for tourists. Always follow your guide’s instructions, avoid walking alone at night in cities, and keep your valuables secure. When on safari, never exit the vehicle unless directed by your guide.

10. Responsible Travel

Support local communities by buying locally made crafts and being respectful of wildlife and natural environments. At Maverick Safaris, we’re committed to sustainable tourism that benefits both people and nature.
